Notes from the Interpreter
Myths and Misapplications of the Rules
and Mechanics (Rev. 1/12/2011)
1. It is a traveling
violation when a player is sliding along the court, gains possession
of a loose ball and continues to slide.
2. It is traveling when a player is bobbling or fumbling the ball
and is moving his feet.
3. It is a violation if the ball touches the top or bottom of the
backboard.
4. A player who is out of bounds must have both feet touching
inbounds to establish inbounds status.
5. A player without the ball in their backcourt must have both feet
touching in their frontcourt to establish frontcourt status.
6. A player who fouls immediately after the ball passes through the
basket on a try for goal and before the ball is at the disposal of
the team to make the throw-in is assessed a personal foul.
7. No time or distance is required when a player sets a screen
outside the visual field of an opponent.
8. After the guard establishes an initial legal guarding position on
the dribbler, the guard must maintain both feet on the court and is
not allowed to move or adjust their position prior to contact, even
though such movement is not toward the dribbler.
9. A player shooting at the wrong basket who gets fouled is ruled as
being fouled in the act of shooting.
10. A player who was fouled after starting their continuous motion
toward their basket on a try for goal is not considered to be fouled
in the act of shooting, even when the ball was never released or was
released seconds later and ten feet away from where the foul
occurred.
11. It is a violation for a dribbler who loses their balance and
their dribble to involuntarily touch out of bounds, regain inbounds
status and regain the dribble.
12. It is a backcourt violation when the ball rebounds off the ring
on a try for goal, deflected into the backcourt by a player of the
shooting team and then touched in the backcourt by a player of the
shooting team.
13. It is basket interference when a player of either team touches
the ring when the ball is in the imaginary cylinder above (and not
touching) the ring.
14. A-1, in his/her frontcourt, passes the ball to A-2. The ball
deflects off of A-2’s hands and rolls into team A’s backcourt where
A-1 touches the ball near the endline. The official rules a
backcourt violation on team A and awards the ball to team B on the
sideline near the division line.
15. Team A has possession of the ball in their frontcourt. A player
from team B slaps the ball into team A’s backcourt. The official
resumes the 10-second backcourt count when a player from team A
regains possession in the backcourt.
16. A-2 gains possession of the ball from a jump ball and scores a
field goal in team B’s basket. The official stops play after A-2
scores in team B’s basket, awards two points to A-2 and awards the
ball to team B for a stationary throw-in under team B’s basket.
17. When ruling the foul was committed prior to the try for goal, it
is okay to say “On the floor.”
18. When the player is fouled in the act of shooting, it is okay to
say “Good if it goes.”
19. When an offensive player without the ball is starting to camp
out in the lane, it is okay to tell the player to get out.
20. Before the new Trail official administers the ball on the
endline in the backcourt, it is permissible for the new Lead
official to be behind the endline in the frontcourt.
21. When having to stop play for an injury or other interruptions,
it is permissible to use the 30-second signal and say “My time.”
22. When there is less than 1 minute remaining in the quarter, it is
permissible to use the shot clock violation signal.
23. When signaling a 60-second time-out, it is permissible to use
the double-foul signal.
24. When the ball goes out of bounds, it is permissible to just
sound the whistle and point with two fingers.
25. When showing a visible count, it is permissible to use two
fingers extended.
26. As the Trail in the frontcourt, it is permissible to bail out on
the shot so as not to get beat down court if there is a defensive
rebound.
